About the order
The Mark degree takes its name from the personal mark each stonemason cut into his work so he could claim his wages. In the story of the degree it follows naturally from the Craft's second degree, and its central lesson comes from Psalm 118: the stone the builders rejected became the head of the corner. Candidates are ‘advanced’ in a single two-part ceremony, first as a Mark Man and then as a Mark Master Mason.
The earliest English record of the degree dates from 1769, in a Royal Arch chapter in Portsmouth. The Mark Grand Lodge first met on 23 June 1856 and is based at Mark Masons' Hall, St James's Street, London. Members wear a white apron edged in light blue and crimson, with a keystone jewel. The degree is often called a ‘happy’ one, and new members quickly get involved.
